MailStart has a unique targeted advertising program made possible by providing access to pre-existing e-mail accounts. All advertisements can be targeted to specific Email domains. The Email domain of the user reveals a great deal of demographic information about the user. For example, a student using MailStart would have a top level email domain of .edu. Using the concept of keyword targeting, this user would be shown advertisements targeted to the student/educational community. In addition to the top level domain, the second level domain can also be targeted. Using the previous example, if a potential advertiser wanted to target ads directly to students at UC Davis, MailStart would examine the complete e-mail domain for the UC Davis key word, @ucdavis.edu. When a student from UC Davis checks their e-mail account, the advertisement would be delivered directly to the target audience, thereby maximizing the advertiser investment.
